The Search for the Vagabond Camper

For years I've wanted a vintage trailer. I've got the pinterest pins to prove it! Since we never had a truck to pull that dream trailer, I decided to focus on making our VW bus more livable. We installed a Zbed and started to plan a kitchen setup.

Then... my youngest set her sights to be on the high school equestrian team. We found a ugly little vintage horse trailer for $600. We thought we would learn some transferrable skills from the horse trailer makeover project on the VW in the future. We spent a good 8 months updating that trailer. (I'll show you that project sometime.) We had fun and made it super cute. In the process, we saved up to buy The Real McRoy.

Now that we had truck, I began to dream about that vintage Shasta again. But after our first 4 day Equestrian Team meet I set my sights on a in-the-bed truck camper instead. There was no way we could tow  a horse trailer and a Shasta at the same time. And after spending over $300 for lodging that first meet, we needed something more economical.

For two months, I searched, but the budget and the pickings were slim. Then a week before Christmas, I found a Avion camper on craigslist just a couple hours away. At $900, it would pay for itself in 3 meets. I hurriedly emailed and set up a visitation to "my" camper. I knew it was mine! It had a turquoise stove! (Nevermind that it had no camper jacks and it appeared that the barn had been built around it. I was sure that my amazing husband and my engineer dad could figure out a way to rescue my camper to its rightful home.) I counted the days and the dollars in my mad money and our savings. And then.... on Friday... McRoy's water pump went out. As we towed him to the mechanic, I knew I would have to wait. I was leaving in just a few days for a 2 week trip to Nepal and once again... time and money were short. I emailed the seller, telling her that I would check back when I returned. If it was meant to be, it would still be there.

Nepal was glorious! (Another post for another time.) After recovering from jet lag and catching up with family and work, the Avion ad popped up again. Yay!! It really was mine! I emailed again and set up a time to take a look again. Saturday couldn't come soon enough. But on Friday she texted that someone had purchased it that morning. I was in the depths of despair. To be continued....
