There is so much that has been written about the famous Amelia Earhart. Most of it focuses on her disappearance over the Pacific Ocean after having completed over 24,000 miles of flight. But what an accomplishment: 24,000+ miles of flight! What an adventure!
That is what Amelia strived for: Adventure. She often spoke publicly on the topic "Flying is Fun!" encouraging her listeners to "Let your daughters fly." The hours spent speaking in public and writing letters to establish the Ninety-Nines may have seemed mundane. However, those mundane tasks were necessary for the adventure to take place. Without the mundane as contrast, nothing could be an adventure. This is what I have to keep in mind as I study for one more exam, shop for groceries, or stress about the future. The adventure is worthwhile in itself. This could mean that everything I slog through (budgets, training, car trouble) becomes worthwhile once I finally get that one glorious cross country flight or backpacking trip. Or it could mean that finding the adventure in everything can make anything worthwhile.
That's how I like to think of this quote. My task is to find the adventure in my day to day life. Maybe I take a back road to the grocery store. Or make an armchair flight plan. Practice a backpack meal at home. Try out a new type of cheese. Learn a new skill.
For those of us with adventure in our souls, this is life-giving.
How do you find adventure in your daily life?
